Ethical Practice:  The Way Counseling Should Be
July 18th, 2008
6 CEU's  Cost: $89.00
Location:  The United Way building
24 Springer Drive
Bangor, Maine 04401
9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Taught by
Allen Drucker, M.Ed, LCPC

This six-hour training will comply with new ethical training requirements to be
instituted in 2010.  It will cover such issues as dual relationships, the problem of
abandonment, relationships with clients, bartering and the dichotomy between
HIPAA and CFR 42.  Participants will study examples of ethical boundary
violations with an eye toward identifying events during the time-line where
problems could have been avoided.  Adaptations of actual events will be used
with individuals involved carefully de-identified.

Professional Ethics, although clear in many respects, at times conflicts with
applicable law and agency policies.  Ways of ensuring client confidentiality, while
simultaneously protecting the counselor, will be discussed.

Goals
At the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Be able to discuss ethical risk factors with a greater understanding of the
    issues involved.
  2.  Articulate a safety plan for therapists to avoid mistakes in ethical decision-
    making
  3. Identify crisis points in a continuum of care that may arise and how to deal
    with them.
  4. Appreciate differing points of view on how best to avoid ethical liability.
