Motivational Interviewing:  Online Course

We're very pleased to announce that the Health Education and Training
Institute is now offering an online course in motivational interviewing, presented
by the HETI team and facilitated by our own Stephen Andrew, LCSW, LADC,
CCS!  We've worked very hard to make this online course dynamic, informative,
interactive, relevant, and fun!  Access the material within each of the four weeks
on your own time, from the comfort of your home or office!

Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based, directive method
for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving
ambivalence.  Our course objectives are as follows:

During this four-week online workshop, participants will learn:

  • The fundamentals of motivational interviewing
  • The core OARS strategies of the motivational interviewing process
  • Ways to identify and elicit change talk
  • Strategies for exploring and resolving ambivalence

The learning process is varied across several modalities, to maximize your
opportunity to familiarize yourself with motivational interviewing as it can be
practically applied in your practice.  The course includes  the following
course requirements:

  • Watching our prepared online training program
  • Online reading assignments
  • Observation of online motivational interviewing demonstrations
by Stephen Andrew, LCSW, LADC, CCS!
  • Completion of quizzes following material covered
  • Participation in the weekly Discussion Board on our Guestbook
  • Completion of a final assignment, to make the material your own
and improve your comfort level with application of the theory
  • Completion of a course evaluation

An e-mail address, access to the internet, and a basic understanding of use of
the internet is required.  While we may be able to help you problem-solve
difficulties that may arise with any part of this course, we are not able to provide
computer technical support.  While this course allows for an opportunity to
participate in discussion with other participants via discussion board on our
Guestbook, there are no 'real time' interactions.  New material for each week will
be posted on Wednesday mornings, and completion of each week's steps are
due by the following Tuesday.  A certificate of completion will be provided when
the course requirements have been met.

The main text for motivational interviewing is Motivational Interviewing, Second
Edition: Preparing People for Change by William R. Miller Ph.D., Stephen
Rollnick Ph.D.  While it is not required reading for this online course, we
enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about
motivational interviewing.

Credit for continuing education hours from any online course is ultimately
approved, denied and/or limited by regulation from your licensing board or
boards.  Find out directly from your licensing board(s) about whether this is a
possibility for you.

Programs cancelled by HETI due to weather conditions, trainer availability or lack of
participants will be rescheduled or fully refunded. Cancellations received 7 business days in
advance will receive full refund. There will be a $25 fee for cancellations received 6 business
days or less before a program. Fees will not be refunded for "no shows" or cancellations
received on the day of the program.
