Description:  

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England (ATTC/NE, funded by the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for
Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), is offering an on-line course on advances in the area
of pharmacology. The discussion material and information will be given via a class WWW
page, with more in depth on-line information found through links to other web sites.   

The focus will be to look at some of the new drugs of abuse that are creating problems for
treatment professionals, to look at old drugs that are returning in popularity, and to look at
some of the research findings that are providing new direction for treatment approaches.
Special attention will be given to the following drugs Ketamine®, inhalants, steroids,
cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol. Students will be provided the opportunity of posting
questions about specific drugs of abuse that they may wish to find more information about.
Numerous links and web resources will also be provided to allow students to maintain the
opportunity of staying on top of the newest findings from federal research projects. Materials
will be processed through group discussion, written assignments, and group projects. This
course is designed for a wide audience and in general will not exceed the graduate level in
difficulty of material.

Course Objectives:  

The objectives of this program are

  • Provide an overview to psychoactive drugs
  • Discuss newer drugs of abuse that have surfacing in treatment programs
  • Review some common drugs of abuse that are creating new problems for addiction
    professionals
  • Review current research findings that provide new guidance and direction in
    treatment approaches
  • Create new links to state and federal sites that will provide ongoing updates on new
    research findings

Course Requirements:  

This is a four week course, beginning on June 2, 2008. Requirements are:

  • Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
  • Completion of pre and post test
  • Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
  • Participation in the weekly forum
  • Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be
posted on the class WWW home page on Tuesdays and responses are due the following
Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant's convenience.

To participate, you must have:

  • An E-mail address and the capacity to retrieve and send E-mail;
  • Access to World Wide Web (the following programs provide WWW access:
    Netscape, Apple CyberDog, and Microsoft Explorer)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher is the preferred browser for ATTC-NE online courses
  • The ability to navigate the World Wide Web
  • A basic understanding of how to use a computer and send and receive email

The cost for this course is $59.95.  Payment must be received by the
Health Education and Training Institute before completing registration
with the ATTC-NE. You will be given additional registration information
after payment has been received.

Accreditation:  

This four-week course, which begins June 2, 2008, has been approved by the National
Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 8  educational
credits. It is being provided by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England,
which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151). This course
meets the qualifications for 8 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC's and/or
LCSW's as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917).  This
course is approved by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for eight Category 1
continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC's). The CCB is an
IC&RC affiliate. The New York State OASAS does accept distance education CEUs provided
by the Addiction Technology Transfer Network for individuals pursuing or renewing a
CASAC, CPP or CPS.Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the
program for its duration who submit all required materials.
