Certificate Program in the
Advanced Practice of Motivational Interviewing
The HETI Certificate Program in the Advanced Practice of Motivational Interviewing is
designed for anyone who would like to enhance their practice of Motivational Interviewing, or
for those who are looking for a way to demonstrate their current level of advanced practice.

The goal of the program is to demonstrate consistent “competency” in the practice of
Motivational Interviewing.
Competency is demonstrated by receiving a global rating of a 4.0
based on the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code 3.1 (MITI 3.1).
(

Participants have up to one year to complete the program.  Work and progress will be
evaluated by submitting audio recorded sessions with a client/patient or a real/role play with
a friend or co-worker.  The sessions will then be coded using the MITI 3.1.

You will receive coded results and feedback on how well you are applying the principles and
skills of Motivational Interviewing to your work.  You will work with these results, improving
along the way, until you reach the first milestone:  a global rating of 4.0.

The next phase of your program will be to show consistent competency.  This will be
demonstrated once you are able to provide three, consecutive competent recordings.

Recommended Prerequisites:
This program is a rigorous undertaking and we recommend that you have completed
Motivational Interviewing: the Basics and Motivational Interviewing: Advancing Practice before
registering for the Certification Program.

Application Process:
To assess your current level of skill, we ask that you fill out our application form and submit
one audio recording of a session with a client/patient (or a real/role play with a
friend or co-worker) and send it in to be coded.
For detailed instructions regarding recordings, click here.
