It must be an interview with an actual client 18 years or older (or if younger, permission by a parent or guardian is necessary) being helped by you and for a supervision session. Role-played interviews may be acceptable. Whenever possible, the work sample should occur on or before a client’s third session. 2. The session must include only two persons: yourself and the client. Couple and groups sessions are not appropriate as they are difficult to code appropriately. 3. Signed permission must be obtained from the client (use the enclosed Client Consent Form or your own designed one), witnessed and signed by you (for your records). Submit a statement of a Certification of Client Consent form with your work sample audiotape. 4. The interview must be at least 20 minutes long. Partial interviews with different clients cannot be combined. The interview must be continuous and may not be edited. 5. Both your voice and the client’s voice must be clearly audible. Use a good quality tape recorder preferably with an external microphone using standard sie (not micro) audiotape cassette. Check the quality of the sound before sending the sample to ensure that both voices are clearly audible. 6. The work sample must be submitted (postmarked) no later than two weeks after the interview occurred and we will return it coded within two weeks. We may have a half-hour telephone coaching/consultation for feedback on your practice tape if agreed upon. 7. Send the work sample along with the original signed Statement of a Certification of Client Consent form. Label the tape with the therapist’s name and the date of the session. Use a padded envelope with a self-stamped envelope to return the tape to you. 8. Our coding of Motivational Interviewing tapes s only for the purpose of increasing competency in the use of Motivational Interviewing in individual work.
