| Ethics, Law, and Substance Abuse Ethical decisions are often complex and multifaceted, as well as defying simple solutions. There are many "gray areas" that demand both reflection and the use of decision-making skills. This class will provide you with the opportunity to evaluate boundaries when working with people, and to learn models of ethical decision-making. We will explore exercises that help define and resolve ethical problems at work. We will also discuss the link between the quality of ethics and the quality of care. | Motivational Interviewing: The Basics This two-day training will discuss an effective approach in the treatment of challenging clients, and provide participants with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating these approaches into an effective therapeutic intervention -- when to use, when not to use motivational interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. During this two-day workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing, explore ways of integrating Motivational Interviewing theories into other treatment approaches, and practice motivational interviewing on "challenging" clients through role playing and discussion. | Advanced Motivational Interviewing This one-day training , which has a prerequisite of at least four hours of Motivational-Interviewing training, will discuss further the new effective approach in the treatment of substance abusers, dual diagnosis, and will provide participants with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating these approaches into an effective therapeutic intervention. During this one-day workshop, participants will discuss a brief review and practice of Motivational Interviewing spirit and some basic skills, and an overview of what's important. | The Practice of Supervision/Coaching Using Motivational Interviewing This two full day training will discuss effective methods of supervising workers and provides participants with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating effective interventions with workers in motivating them. The practice of supervision using motivational interviewing is a worker-centered directive method for enhancing the intrinsic motivation within the worker, by helping them to explore and resolve their own ambivalence. | Understanding the 12 Core Functions and Preparing for the Oral Exam This workshop will focus on the 12 core functions of substance-abuse counseling. Participants will be shown the value of each Core Function and how they interrelate to each other. Additionally, the 46 Global Criteria, which fall within the 12 Core Functions, will be reviewed, clarified, and to some degree simplified. Participants will be given an overview of how these Core Functions are utilized in determining competency through the certification / licensing process for substance-abuse counselors. | The Power of Groups Group work provides several effective important steps that help break the isolation often experienced by the client. This training will provide information on how to use groups as a treatment strategy. We will address why using motivational interviewing in a therapeutic support group format is extremely effective. We will explore issues of interpersonal interaction in the group process, group norms, empathy, and how to use the group format to lower resistance. Taught by Stephen Andrew, LCSW, LADC, CGP. |
| Angry Boys, Angry Men Many males are socialized in their families, their communities, and the culture to be violent, and to use anger as often the only dimension of their emotional life. Anger can promote violence against others and frequently leads to self-destructive behavior, i.e. chemical dependency. Angry males often physically, verbally, or sexually abuse women and children. Some boys and men come to counseling because of their history of violence, while others come because they have depression, addiction, or relationship problems. Males often neglect their physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual self. Through this workshop you will learn how to begin the healing for angry boys and men. | Working with Boys, Working with Men Based on the latest research in child development as we begin to understand boys, and boys as they become men, we become aware of the significant impact of boys being disconnected from relationships and feeling an emotional dampening of their heart. In this context, they develop a great deal of shame. This workshop will talk about treatment, techniques, and reconnecting the authentic self in the relational context. | Spiritual Development Training and Supervision Group Learn how to bring your full unconditional presence to relationships with people who come to you for consultation. This training and consultation group will meet bi-weekly with a focus on integrating a spiritually-sensitive, presence-centered focus into clinical practice. The methods we will explore are influenced by Narrative and Contemplative Psychotherapy practice. Ample opportunity will be given for spiritual development work, clinical demonstration, role play, and clinical-case discussion in a supportive, respectful atmosphere.
