Motivational Interviewing: Advancing the Practice
February 2023

This one-day training is an introduction to the evidence-based clinical method of Motivational Interviewing, an effective approach in the care of challenging clients, and will provide participants with an opportunity to explore creative ways of integrating these approaches. Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. After orientation to the underlying spirit, structure, and principles of Motivational Interviewing, practical exercises will help participants strengthen empathy skills, recognize and elicit change talk, and roll with discord.

The participants in the concurrent Teaching Motivational Interviewing workshop will be periodically joining this workshop to lead exercises as part of their training. We are offering this workshop at a discount and will be inviting feedback about the new trainers.

From Kelly's recent Advancing the Practice trainings:

  • Excellent approach and method to training. Very experienced presenter. Very, very good training.

  • This class helped me break down MI in a way I was able to understand and had opportunity to practice what I have learned.

  • Much appreciation for this training and the way the spirit of MI came through - very relevant have taken several trainings in MI over the years, this one made the difference for me, has re-ignited my interest in pursuing MI

Kelly led the training incredibly well. She modeled MI techniques, listened attentively to participants, facilitated rich conversations which deepened the learning, and created a safe space to experiment, opine and practice the principles being taught. I absolutely loved it!
