Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, evidence-based practice, goal oriented method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence; the struggle within.  Ambivalence about change and low motivation are hallmarks of eating disorders.  In addition, caregivers of people who experience chronic eating disorders have high levels of psychological distress and often engage in accommodating behavior as a result.
Motivational Interviewing has been shown to be effective in increasing client motivation for change, resulting in better outcomes for treatment.  In addition Caregiver burden has been shown to be reduced and efficacy increased through learning about and practicing Motivational Interviewing strategies.  This half-day training will discuss how to integrate Motivational Interviewing into eating disorder support, care and treatment, and provide participants with an opportunity to practice and explore the use of Motivational Interviewing in a therapeutic intervention.
