
Hepatitis C and Motivational Interviewing:
Engaging for Treatment
This six-hour workshop is designed to familiarize participants with the epidemiology, symptoms, and treatments for the hepatitis C virus (HCV), and the use of Motivational Interviewing skills (MI) to engage affected individuals in treatment, supporting the goal of elimination of HCV as a virus of concern. Participants will consider specific MI skills and protocols and their role in connecting affected individuals with support and treatment.
Overall Goal: To enable participants familiar with Motivational Interviewing to acquire the information and practice needed to use their skills to engage affected individuals in a productive discussion around treatment.
Target Audience: Helping professionals at all levels of education, including, but not limited to: substance use counselors, mental health counselors, social workers, recovery coaches, and rehabilitation counselors. Participants should have
previously attended at least an introductory course in MI.
Learning Level: Intermediate
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the transmission routes of HCV and the populations at highest risk of infection.
2. List available treatments for HCV and strategies for screening for HCV.
3. Demonstrate the use of MI skills in simulated conversations around HCV.
