This Advanced Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training is designed to equip experienced professionals with the skills to teach, train, and coach others in MI. This intensive, three-and-a-half-day training will help you develop the tools to facilitate effective, evidence-based MI techniques across a variety of settings, including agencies, schools, and institutions.
Who Should Attend
Key Learning Objectives
This training is for individuals who are already proficient in Motivational Interviewing. Applicants must have substantial familiarity and experience with MI, as this training will focus on teaching and coaching others in MI, rather than acquiring clinical proficiency.
The goal is to develop your capacity to train, supervise, and coach others in MI while fostering a deeper understanding of how to effectively integrate MI into diverse settings.
In this hands-on training, participants will:
● Learn how to teach MI: Develop strategies for presenting MI content clearly and engagingly to diverse audiences.
● Coach others in MI: Gain skills to supervise and mentor others, offering constructive feedback that supports their MI practice.
● Integrate MI across settings: Explore how to apply MI principles effectively in health care, education, corrections, and other settings.
● Practice MI with challenging clients: Participate in role-plays to develop skills in managing difficult or resistant clients using MI techniques.
● Understand MI theory and research: Build a solid foundation in the rationale behind MI and the research supporting its effectiveness.
● Enhance your observation skills: Cultivate a mindful "observing eye" to notice resistance, change talk, and commitment language during MI conversations
Teaching Practice: Teach While You Learn
One of the unique aspects of this training is the opportunity to immediately put your teaching skills into practice. During this workshop, participants will have the chance to teach a group of peers who are concurrently participating in our MI Foundational and MI Advancing the Practice courses. This hands-on teaching experience will allow you to apply the MI training concepts in real-time, as you guide others through exercises. This practical teaching experience is designed to build confidence, enhance your presentation skills, and give you direct feedback from both participants and trainers. By the end of the training, you'll feel more adept at engaging learners, managing group dynamics, and delivering MI content in an effective and engaging way.
Course Prerequisites
Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing is a prerequisite for this advanced training. Applicants must have already completed Motivational Interviewing Foundational and Motivational Interviewing Advancing the Practice trainings and have significant experience using MI in practice.
To demonstrate proficiency, you'll need to be able to have the following MITI Coding results:
- Relational Components: A combined score of 4 for Partnership & Empathy.
- Technical Components: A combined score of 4 for Cultivating Change Talk & Softening Sustain Talk.
- Reflection Skills: At least 50% of your reflections should be Complex Reflections.
- Question-to-Reflection Ratio: Maintain a 2:1 ratio of reflections to questions.
These measures are based on the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) 4.2.1 system, a tool designed to provide objective, compassionate feedback to help you strengthen your practice and increase your confidence in Motivational Interviewing.
To apply for the training, applicants must:
● Submit a written application.
